Saints recap day two of full pads during 2025 training camp

METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – The seventh day of Saints 2025 training camp was also the team’s second fully-padded practice, and during both in one-on-one and team drills, Trevor Penning’s transition to guard has shown continual progress.

“Trevor’s done an excellent job. Anytime you’re in a new position, it’s going to take a few days, take a little bit just to get settled in there, when you get to the real thing,” head coach Kellen Moore said.

Although Penning is going through his second position change in only four years at the NFL level (going from left tackle to right tackle in 2024, and now from right tackle to left guard) this particular transition is different.

Moore’s championship offensive line with the Philadelphia Eagles last season featured a 2020 first round draft pick: Mekhi Becton, who went from left tackle to right guard and was a mainstay of Philly’s offensive line, and former Eagles tight end Jack Stoll sees the same potential in the Saints 2022 first rounder.

“I think it is very similar. I think he’s got a lot of talent, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do. We’ve had two days of pads, and I’ll tell you this: I’ve seen him drive someone 50 yards already and drive him into the ground. Listen he’s got that thing,” Stoll added.

Penning has been known for his physicality and aggression, since entering the NFL, but with the move inside, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders praised how the former tackle turned guard can dominate at his new position.

“I think that’s one of the best moves we could have made, honestly, because Trevor is, very, very strong. His hands are strong. He’s an aggressive type. Being on the inside complements his skill set a little more, with that power,” Saunders continued.

Penning’s own thoughts align with Saunders. The new guard has to adjust to the immediate impact, when facing defensive lineman closer at the line of scrimmage, but combining his skillset with Moore’s scheme has created opportunities for Penning to shine.

“Being a powerful guy. That’s what I am, and I think the things that we do is going to help show that and really work to my benefit. Not only driving guys, but getting out in space, pulling, I think there’s going to be a lot of fun,” Penning said.

The Saints continue training camp on Thursday.
