L.A. County beaches reopen after tsunami advisory lifted, officials warn residents to stay out of water

Los Angeles County beaches reopened Wednesday after the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center lifted a tsunami advisory for the West Coast, officials announced.

“The L.A. County Department of Beaches and Harbors is opening restrooms, accessways and parking lots at beaches it manages, as well as parking lots in Marina del Rey, hours earlier than anticipated. The Dockweiler RV Park is also open,” the department said in a news release.

Despite the reopening, authorities are urging the public to remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions.

“The main thing to stress is that currents will be very strong across all the coastal waters today,” the National Weather Service Los Angeles office said in a post on X. “People should stay out of the water and avoid harbors all along the SoCal coast.”

Residents are also encouraged to monitor guidance from local emergency officials.

Several Southern California beaches and piers were closed Tuesday evening as a precaution after a powerful earthquake struck about 80 miles off the east coast of Russia. The quake, the strongest in the region since Japan’s devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake in 2011, could rank as the sixth most powerful ever recorded.

The tsunami advisory, initially expected to remain in place through Saturday, was canceled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Wednesday morning.
