Help for low income Louisiana residents fighting the IRS

BATON ROUGE, La (WGNO) — A problem for many low income residents that have issues with the Internal Revenue Service is that often times you can’t afford to pay back taxes, let alone fight the IRS.

The LSU School of Law Low Income Tax Clinic is assisting residents. Director Cherish Van Mullem
addressed the challenges faced.

“When you get a notice from the IRS, it’s very disturbing. And it’s even more disturbing when you try to deal with it by yourself. The IRS is not exactly a friendly place, and they speak a different language,” said Van Mullem.

The clinic exists to decipher that language and provide representation before the IRS or tax court for any matter a taxpayer may face.

“So, anytime they receive a notice or anytime they don’t receive a notice, but they’ve been made aware that there’s some sort of lien or something or garnishment on their wages, that’s where we come in and try to help them through that process,” said Van Mullem.

For more information on the tax clinic, visit the LSU Law website.

While our flagship institution is located in Baton Rouge, the help is available to residents statewide.

“We’re going all over the state trying to let people know about the services. It’s open to anybody who meets the low income standard,” said Van Mullem.

The Low Income Tax Clinic does not perform tax preparation. Their services are provided year round.
