According to a post on the department’s social media, officials said the crash occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Sheek Road. The department later clarified that the accident occurred near the intersection of Main Street and South Park Boulevard, behind a gas station in the 1100 block of E. Main Street.
Officials with the department confirmed that one person has been pronounced dead after Wednesday morning’s crash.
In an update from the Greenwood Fire Department, they said the plane that crashed was a small aircraft. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crews are currently investigating the incident. The department said there is no information about the plane’s origin, destination or cause of the crash at this time.
“The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified, are en route and will handle the investigation,” the update from the department read.
In an update from the Greenwood Fire Department, no information surrounding the person who died in the plane has been confirmed. There is also no indication of what led to the crash.
The department said officials with the FAA and the NTSB could give updates later.
