Gilbert Montaño to leave position as New Orleans Chief Administrative Officer

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Chief Administrative Officer for the City of New Orleans, Gilbert Montaño, is leaving the Cantrell Administration.

At a news conference on Wednesday, July 30, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced that Montaño is transitioning from his role as CAO.

Montaño has served in the position for seven years, starting in 2018.

“Gilbert brought not only skill and discipline to the role of Chief Administrative Officer for the City of New Orleans, but a real compassion of innovation and a deep commitment to serving the City of New Orleans. He made sure that we focused on making the true investments that would lead this city and will stay with this city literally for generations to come,” said Cantrell at Wednesday’s news conference.

Montaño reflected on his time as CAO in the city and expressed gratitude to those who have supported him during his time in the role, noting he is excited to pass the baton to Deputy CAO Joe Threat.

“Ultimate gratitude for the city, ultimate gratitude for the mayor, ultimate gratitude for everybody that wakes up every day that comes in these jobs. You will never know what it’s like until you’re in the seat of some of these leaders and I appreciate everybody. I’m looking forward to the next journey and I’m excited,” Montaño said.

Montaño said he will be taking a breather after his departure.

“I’m going to take a little breather and kind of decompress and evaluate. I’ve been blessed with some opportunities that I’m finalizing and determining. I hope to have that forthcoming at the appropriate time and place,” Montaño said.

Cantrell said Threat will move into the CAO role after Montaño’s departure at the end of August.
