COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Columbus has achieved international recognition after being named the Freestyle Kayaking Capital of the United States.

With more than 50,000 visitors traveling to Columbus each year for whitewater sports, the city now serves as the No. 1 destination for kayakers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) awarded Columbus the first-ever Center of Excellence in Canoe Freestyle as it recognized the city’s water activities and recreational spaces.

Columbus is also set to host the 2028 and 2029 ICF Freestyle Kayaking World Cup events, which cements the city’s role as a global hub for elite paddlers and outdoor adventure.

“Columbus continues to invest in the river and outdoor recreation because it enriches our community and supports economic growth,” said Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson. “Being named an ICF Center of Excellence is a testament to our city’s vision and hosting the 2028 World Cup and 2029 World Championship will bring thousands of visitors to experience the best of Columbus.”

According to ICF, the city’s urban whitewater rafting course, which is the world’s largest of its kind, has drawn visitors and athletes from around the globe.
