Alternating I-70 lane closures to last for months in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – State transportation officials report that drivers should expect alternating lane closures on I-70 in both directions in Topeka for several weeks to come.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced on KanDrive that it will be conducting paving operations on I-70 in both eastbound and westbound directions of traffic. Work is scheduled to begin on Sunday, Aug. 3 and continue through to Friday, Oct. 31 this year in the following schedule format:

  • Thursdays – Midnight to 6 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to midnight.
  • Fridays – midnight to 6 a.m.
  • Sundays – 5 p.m. to midnight.
  • Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – midnight to 6 a.m.

KDOT reports the area where this work will be taking place starts at where I-70 meets Sixth Street and ends where the highway connects to the Kansas Turnpike. You can learn more about the project by going to KanDrive.

State and federal transportation officials are currently working together to make improvements to I-70 in downtown Topeka as part of the $239 million Polk-Quincy Viaduct Project. You can learn more about this project by heading to KDOT’s website.
