First-year head coach Zach Watkins is no stranger to Ichabod football, having served on its coaching staff since 2014—first as a co-defensive coordinator/special teams coordinator and most recently as an assistant head coach.
He took over for Craig Schurig, who accepted a job with North Alabama.
Watkins was a four-year starting linebacker for the Ichabods from 2006-2009, being named the MIAA Freshman of the Year in his first season at Washburn.
He’s excited to get to work with his players, and his players are looking forward to learning from a familiar face.
“It’s a different program from when ‘Coach’ ran it, because ‘Coach’ and I are different people,” Watkins told 27 News. “But, the good thing about it is the guys that were on our team, or the coaching staff, have been able to adapt to the new program in a really positive way.”
Senior safety Jordan Finnesy expressed the excitement of Watkins being promoted to head coach.
“All of us players were super pumped up for that hiring and to get to come and join Coach Watkins and just be a part of the new era of Washburn football,” Finnesy said.
The Ichabods open up its season at home on August 30th against Truman State at 1 p.m.
