Suspected DUI hit-and-run crash kills man on scooter

(KRON) — A man who was struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding an electric scooter in San Jose on Saturday succumbed to his injuries days later, the San Jose Police Department announced Tuesday.

The scooter-vehicle crash occurred just before 5 p.m. on the westbound lanes of Capitol Expressway, west of Tuers Road. According to investigators, a man driving a 2005 Chevy Astro van “veered into the bike lane” and struck the victim, who was riding his electric scooter.

Following the crash, the Chevy driver attempted to flee the scene in the Astro but was stopped by responding police officers, SJPD said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Monday, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The driver, who was also not identified by authorities, was arrested for felony hit and run and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
