North Carolina leaders consider overriding vetoes, attempt to pass state budget

RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — North Carolina state senators are discussing the option to override several vetoes on controversial bills.

On Tuesday morning, Governor Josh Stein urged legislators to pass a budget that prioritizes taking care of North Carolinians. He says it’s time for the governing body to “put its money where its mouth is.”

For Stein, that includes meaningful raises for state employees. He says teachers, law enforcement officers, youth counselors, and other workers deserve to know they are valued without a new budget that is already four weeks overdue. Additionally, public employees will not get additional resources.

Both the House and the Senate are slated to hold veto override votes on a combined 14 bills Governor Stein stopped from going into law.

Proposed legislation includes new rules for concealed carry permits, officially recognizing two genders, and immigration enforcement in the state.

Overrides need a majority vote from both chambers.
