Nolan County jailers praised for stopping suicide attempt

SWEETWATER, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Two jailers in Nolan County are being commended for their quick thinking and actions in stopping an inmate from committing suicide.

On July 16, 2025, Jailer Amber Mulanax was doing a routine cell check when she noticed unusual behavior in one of the inmates. She quickly called for backup, then she and Jail Sergeant Israel Vera entered the cell. They found the inmate attempting suicide, and immediately jumped in to prevent a tragic ending.

The Nolan County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) states that their actions were nothing short of heroic, adding that Mulanax’s ability to remain calm under pressure and her quick thinking played a crucial role in saving the inmate’s life.

“Their bravery and selflessness during this incident have brought honor not only to themselves but also to the entire Law Enforcement profession and the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office,” The NCSO shared online. “Their actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated professionals can have in their communities, particularly in high-stress situations where lives hang in the balance. The recognition of their efforts is not merely a commendation; it is an acknowledgment of the profound responsibility that comes with the role of a jailer and the potential for positive change that exists within the corrections system.”
