Long Beach substitute, baseball coach charged with sexual abuse of student

A Long Beach man who coaches high school baseball has been charged with multiple sex crimes against a female student, and authorities are continuing to search for potential victims.

On Monday, 34-year-old Gabriel Vigil was charged in a Long Beach courtroom with multiple felony counts for having sex with a minor under the age of 18, contacting a minor for sex, and “distributing or showing” pornography to a minor. He also faces two additional felony counts of meeting a minor for lewd purposes.

Vigil was working as a substitute employee and baseball coach at Cabrillo High School when the alleged crimes happened between May 1 and July 1, 2025.

Gabriel Vigil, 34, of Long Beach is shown in this undated mugshot provided by the Long Beach Police Department.

He was arrested last week at his Long Beach home near Pacific Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway after a school staff member reported the alleged abuse, which took place off-campus, including multiple times at Vigil’s apartment.

The Long Beach Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said these crimes might not be isolated events, and they are urging any victims to come forward.

“Sex predators who exploit their position of trust in a school setting and target minors should know that my office will work with law enforcement to find you, arrest you, and hold you fully accountable,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a news release. “We fully support the victim in this case as prosecutors in our Sex Crimes Division seek justice against the perpetrator.”

Vigil pleaded not guilty to his charges and is being held on $250,000 bail, Hochman’s office said.

If convicted as charged, he could face up to eight years in state prison and would be forced to register as a sex offender for life.

He is due in court again on Aug. 4.

The investigation remains ongoing, and any additional victims are urged to contact the Long Beach Police Department’s Sex Crimes Division at 562-570-7321.
