The La Plata Police Department said the crash happened on Saturday along Maryland Highway 6 while the two women were heading to a party to spend time with friends.
Police Chief Matt Norris said he believes the other driver was speeding and drinking.
“It is a tragedy. Two lives are lost,” Norris said. “Shortly before they could arrive, their lives are cut short because of the negligence of another driver.”
Many people in La Plata, including Jamar Jefferson, are calling the deadly two-car crash heartbreaking. Jefferson and his friend often go cycling along that highway and say their hearts go out to the victims.
“That was tragic, that was someone’s daughters, or someone’s aunt or mother, maybe, and to lose a family member like that is serious and tragic,” Jefferson said.
Police identified Dionee Tyree and Teeona Huggins as the two women who died. Their backseat passenger survived.
As a result of the crash, 46-year-old Cory Kane of Charles County was taken into custody but later released.
Norris said the case is ongoing and Kane could face more charges coming from the State’s Attorney’s Office.
“At this time, speed and alcohol are considered factors. At the time he was driving, we don’t know where he was headed, but we have a number of people who tell us he was crossing over the center line,” Norris said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information should call the La Plata Police Department.
