Hessmer man dies in crash on U.S. 71 in Rapides Parish

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (WNTZ) — A Hessmer man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 71, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers from LSP Troop E responded to the crash around 4:42 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 71 and Bill Warner Road. The crash claimed the life of 29-year-old Michael Dauzat Jr., who was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry.

According to the initial investigation, Dauzat was traveling southbound on U.S. 71 when he attempted to cross the northbound lanes to access a nearby service road. His vehicle was struck by a northbound 1993 Chevrolet Caprice.

Dauzat sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. It is currently unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Caprice, who was properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

Routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

State police reminded the public that distracted and inattentive driving remain leading causes of crashes in Louisiana.

“A lapse in one’s awareness can have deadly consequences,” LSP said in a statement, urging motorists to stay alert behind the wheel.
