Former LDS Church Relief Society General President Bonnie D. Parkin dies at 84

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — President Bonnie D. Parkin, former Relief Society General President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away Monday at the age of 84.

The church confirmed President Parkin’s passing to ABC4.com Tuesday morning. Parkin served as General Relief Society President for the church from 2002 to 2007.

“If I could have one thing happen for parents and leaders of this church, it would be that they feel the love of the Lord in their lives each day as they care for Heavenly Father’s children,” President Parkin said following her call to serve.

Early life

Parkin was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Murray, Utah, but was raised in Herriman to a family of rich pioneer heritage.

Parkin graduated in 1962 from Utah State University in elementary education and early childhood development, leading her to a career as a teacher. She taught third grade.

In 1963, just one year later, she met James L. Parkin and married him in the Salt Lake Temple later that year. The two would have four boys.

A life of service

In 1997, Parkin moved to England with James to serve in the London South Mission for the church. The two would preside over the mission.

Before becoming president of the Relief Society, President Parkin served as second counselor to Janette C. Hales in the Young Women General Presidency.

“As members of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is our blessing and our responsibility to nurture and sustain the family unit,” President Parkin said during her ministry. “Everyone belongs to a family, and every family needs to be strengthened and protected.”

When called, she emphasized the importance of pressing forward amid challenges. “[God] cherishes us even when we stumble and experience temporary setbacks.”

Parkin’s viewing will be held Friday, Aug. 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral will take place the following day on Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Parleys Stake Center (1870 Parleys Canyon Blvd, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106).
