Written from press release:
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — July 28, 2025 — Bloomingfoods Co-op Market has alerted customers to a potential data security incident after discovering a credit card skimming device on one of its payment terminals at the East Store. The device was found on Saturday, July 12, and removed immediately, according to a press release issued Monday by the co-op.
The skimming device was attached to Register 3 and, after reviewing surveillance footage, Bloomingfoods determined it had been in place since Saturday, June 28. A skimmer is an illegal device used to steal data from the magnetic stripes of payment cards, which can be used to commit fraud.
While there is no confirmed breach of customer data, Bloomingfoods is advising anyone who used Register 3 at the East Store between June 28 and July 12 to assume their credit, debit, EBT, or gift card information may have been compromised if they swiped the card.
The co-op is working with local law enforcement and has launched a full investigation. Updates will be posted at bloomingfoods.coop/data-security.
Security Enhancements Underway
In response to the incident, Bloomingfoods has implemented several immediate security measures across both of its stores, including:
- Multiple daily inspections of all payment terminals by trained management staff.
- Accelerated rollout of upgraded hardware for added protection.
- Enhanced surveillance and monitoring in checkout areas.
- Updated staff training to recognize signs of tampering or fraudulent activity.
- Full review of PCI compliance to ensure adherence to industry security standards.
- Ongoing compliance with all relevant state and federal data privacy laws.

Customers who believe they may have been affected are encouraged to:
- Monitor bank and credit card statements for suspicious activity and report anything unusual to their card issuer.
