The coroner’s office says the manner of death for 9-year-old Sophia Subedi was ruled “accidental” and that the child did not experience a medical event that caused the drowning at the Pennsylvania theme park.
On Monday, the Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg identified Subedi as the child who died after the incident at Hersheypark on July 24.
Subedi had become unresponsive at “The Shore” wave pool, which is located at The Boardwalk at Hersheypark and, according to park officials, was treated by lifeguards before being taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she was declared deceased.
On Thursday evening, the CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, John Lawn, said there will be a “thorough internal review” of the incident.
“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family,” said Lawn. “We extend our deepest condolences for their loss.”
Nexstar’s WHTM has reached out to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts for comment regarding the coroner’s report.
According to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, The Boardwalk employs an “award-winning team of lifeguards” who meet “rigorous safety standards.”
“There were 10 lifeguards specifically dedicated to the wave pool at the time of the incident,” said Quinn Bryner, Director of Public Relations for Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. “The specific lifeguards stationed at the wave pool received the highest level of training and certification from E&A, known as Special Facility Training, which includes deep-water lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, AED use, supplemental oxygen support, CPR, and First Aid. Additionally, as part of Hersheypark’s commitment to water safety, complimentary lifevests are also available to all of our guests.”
According to the Hersheypark website, The Shore is a 378,000-gallon wave pool that gradually deepens from 0 to 6 feet. Guests under 4 feet tall must wear a life vest in the wave pool, which was closed on Friday but has since reopened.
Derry Township Police say they are working with the coroner’s office and Hersheypark as part of their investigation. Chief Garth Warner called the situation “tragic” and said Friday that officers are continuing to gather information from witnesses.
According to Tilak Niroula, Chairman of the Board for the Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg, Subedi was born in Mount Carmel, Ohio, and had lived in Harrisburg since 2022, recently completing 3rd grade at North Side Elementary School in the Central Dauphin School District.
Funeral and memorial services are expected to take place on Wednesday at Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home in Harrisburg, according to the Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg.
