St. Paul puts in safety barriers around soccer fields at Como ParkSt. Paul puts in safety barriers around soccer fields at Como Park
One of St. Paul’s largest and busiest parks, Como Regional Park, is getting some safety improvements after a vehicle drove onto soccer fields while a game was in progress last April.

No one was injured in the incident, but the city moved quickly to install rock and fortified poles to protect the soccer and baseball fields at a cost of $117,000.
St. Paul Park and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the safety measures include a fence around the perimeter of the complex as well.
“And, when it was built, there was no fencing, and you have multiple different types of fields here,” said Rodriguez. “So, the layout is a bit unique to other turf fields across the city, where others are maybe one single turf field fenced that can limit vehicular access. This is a different ballgame over here.”
Rodriguez said the protective measures were not installed sooner because nothing like the April incident had ever happened before in a city-owned park with soccer and baseball fields.
The funding, Rodriguez said, will come from the city’s existing sales tax revenue.
