In a statement from Second Harvest officials surrounding the grand opening of the Bayou Distribution Center, the organization cites rising costs and a sharp drop in federal support as the reason for their expected $9.4 million loss in funding this year.
As a result, officials said they have reevaluated how the 23-parish service area is served and have reduced the workforce by 14%.
“This reorganization ensures we can pursue our mission to end food insecurity for the more than 436,000 in South Louisiana in a sustainable way. This includes our expansion efforts with the recent opening of our new distribution centers in Lake Charles and Houma,” said Second Harvest Officials.
The new distribution center, located in Houma, according to officials, is “a key part of Second Harvest’s long-term strategy to end hunger and build resilience in Coastal Louisiana.”
The facility will consist of cold storage, warehousing and a planned commercial kitchen to boost local food access shorten disaster response times and strengthen collaboration with over 50 partners.
