Representative Robert, R.J. May III was suspended without pay from the South Carolina House after being indicted last month on ten federal counts related to child sexual abuse material.
May was one of the co-founders of the Freedom Caucus, which is the ultraconservative party.
Now the leader of the Freedom Caucus, Representative Jordan Pace (R – Berkley), is calling for a vote to remove him completely from the statehouse.
“Who knows how long the trial is going to take, or when the trial’s going to start … regardless of the outcome, he will be there to represent its district,” Pace said. “So it’s an unprecedented scenario, which is why I think we should take this unprecedented step.”
Pace said it is crucial to do this so that May’s district will be represented in January.
The letter from Pace was sent to the Speaker of the House and Senate President. They would have all of the lawmakers come back and vote to remove Representative May.
Both offices have no comment for 7NEWS as of now, and we have reached out to May’s lawyer and are awaiting a response.
If convicted, May’s charges could carry up to 20 years in federal prison.
