IMPD: 5 people injured in shooting on northeast side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Five people were injured in a shooting on the northeast side of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 3900 block of Hornickel Drive — which is located off of 38th Street — around 4:15 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located a male victim with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

Medics transported the victim from the scene to a local hospital. IMPD reported that the victim is currently in stable condition.

As IMPD’s investigation on Hornickel Drive was unfolding, four other individuals walked into area hospitals with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. IMPD indicated that three of the four victims who showed up at area hospitals are in stable condition. The fourth shooting victim who walked into an area hospital is currently in critical condition.

Police indicated that the four victims who showed up at area hospitals with gunshot wounds were injured in the shooting on Hornickel Drive. IMPD’s detectives believe the shooting happened after four individuals in a vehicle got involved in a disturbance with somebody outside their car. That disturbance then led to an exchange of gunfire.

Police are still working to determine exactly why the individuals involved in the incident fired shots at each other. Investigators are also trying to figure out exactly how old all the injured parties are.

IMPD has confirmed that all of the victims are males. Police also reported that they are not currently searching for any suspects or persons of interest, as detectives believe they have accounted for all parties involved in the shooting.

The agency’s aggravated assault detectives were still canvassing the area to try to find evidence as of 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police are encouraging those with additional information on the shooting to call IMPD at (317) 327-3475. Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana by calling (317) 262-8477.

IMPD had initially reported that four individuals were injured in the shooting on Hornickel Drive. Police provided an update on the number of victims involved in the shooting during a media briefing Sunday evening.

“This is relatively a quieter neighborhood,” IMPD Executive Officer William Young said during the media briefing. “So, we’re hoping that witnesses come forth and neighbors come forth and give us the information that we need.”

Sunday’s incident marked the second mass shooting in Indianapolis this month. Seven people were injured in a shooting in downtown Indianapolis on July 5.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
