IMPD: 2 juveniles taken into custody as enforcement of curfew ordinance continues

INDIANAPOLIS — Over the weekend, officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said that officers had to take at least two juveniles into custody as the city’s curfew ordinance was enforced.

According to a post on social media from IMPD Chief Chris Bailey, Bailey said at least two juveniles were taken to the department’s reunification center over the weekend in reference to violating the curfew.

The city of Indianapolis’s curfew ordinance is 11 p.m. for anyone 14 years and younger, and 1 a.m. for those between the ages of 15 and 17.

“Curfew is about keeping our kids safe,” Bailey said in the post. “Over the weekend, at least two juveniles were taken into custody after refusing to leave a downtown business. Officers tried several times but couldn’t reach their parents.”

The department established the center following the enforcement of the curfew ordinance, taking juveniles to an undisclosed location until parents or another adult retrieves them. The juveniles are also exposed to services provided by community youth advocacy groups at this location.

This comes after IMPD saw no juveniles being brought to the center last weekend, even with the WNBA All-Star festivities, as well as the Indiana Black Expo’s summer celebration, something that individuals called “a win for the people of (Indianapolis).”

According to previous reports, the beginning of July saw multiple violent incidents in downtown Indianapolis involving juveniles, including a mass shooting on July 5 that led to two deaths and seven injuries.

“Let’s work together to keep our young people… safe and accounted for,” Bailey’s post concluded.
