Safeway workers’ strike averted, unions say it’s a ‘victory’

(KRON) – A tentative agreement was reached between the workers of Safeway and the company, according to unions UFCW Local 5 and UFCW Local 648.

The agreement occurred just an hour prior to the strike, according to the unions.

“This is a hard-earned and inspiring victory,” said UFCW Local 5 President John Frahm and UFCW Local 648 President Dan Larson in a joint statement. “Because our members stood together—strong and unshakable—they secured a contract that reflects their value and delivers real improvements for their families and futures.”

In a statement to KRON4 last week, Safeway expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “We are working diligently to balance the needs of our associates and customers, maintain our position as a trusted choice in the market by delivering consistent value, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our business in a highly competitive grocery industry.”

Per UFCW Local 5 and UFCW Local 648, the consensus includes:

  • Meaningful wage increases to reflect workers’ essential contributions
  • A strengthened pension plan that improves workers’ retirement savings
  • Fair scheduling improvements to enhance the quality of life
  • Increase health care contributions to keep benefits affordable and accessible
  • Enhanced job protection language to create safer, more respectful workplaces

Union leaders say they are scheduling ratification votes in the coming days.

The unions participating in the strike totaled more than 25,000 Safeway workers in Northern California and 16,000 in the Bay Area.
