According to the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department, one of its officers was flagged down by a civilian on Washington Street around 9:30 p.m. After speaking with that person, the officer located an individual who had been shot at an apartment complex on Woodlark Drive.
Upon further investigation of the complex, officers located a second person who had been shot.
Police indicated that one of the shooting victims was an adult male and the other was a juvenile male. CMPD indicated that the shooting left the man in serious condition, though officials expect him to survive the injuries he sustained. Police reported that the juvenile is in stable condition.
Investigators believe the person who flagged police down on Washington Street was involved in the shooting in some capacity. CMPD indicated that is has not yet made any arrests related to the shooting, though its officers did detain multiple individuals during their investigation.
“We have a couple people detained just because there was 10-15 people initially when that first officer got here,” CMPD Detective Sergeant Mark Waggoner said during a media briefing. “He wanted to get control of the scene. So, we’re kind of sifting through that. We are taking people out of handcuffs at this moment. Once we figure out what their role was, if they were just here and stuff like that. We do not have any set suspects in mind currently.”
CMPD officers believe the shooting occurred on New York Street. Waggoner indicated that the shooting involved at least two parties.
“We believe that the shooting incident occurred on East New York Street between two different parties,” Waggoner said. “Right now, we’re still trying to figure out why that shooting took place and how many people were involved.”
