DC Council schedules vote on RFK Stadium Deal

Washington (DC News Now) — DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announced a tentative agreement to bring the Washington Commanders back to the RFK Stadium site, with a vote expected next week.

The agreement, which has been in negotiation for weeks, includes $949 million in benefits to the district over 30 years. The team will provide $50 million in a community benefits agreement, focusing on youth sports and education.

“I’m confident that we will have the votes necessary next week,” said Chairman Phil Mendelson, highlighting the support for the deal.

Under the updated deal, the district will receive tax revenue from parking, merchandise, food, and beverages, totaling at least $674 million over 30 years. The team will also relocate senior leadership and sales offices to the district.

Public hearings are scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday, where hundreds of people are expected to voice their opinions on the deal. Council members have been receiving feedback from the public for months through forums, emails, and phone calls.

At-large Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie emphasized the additional value generated by the deal in terms of revenue.

The DC Council is set to vote on the agreement on August 1st, with a second vote scheduled for September 17th. The outcome will determine if the Commanders return to the RFK Stadium site, bringing significant economic and community benefits to the district.
