This nearly 30-year-old Triangle restaurant was named the best diner in North Carolina. Here’s why

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A long-time staple in the Durham area is being recognized as the top diner in North Carolina.

The Food Network published a report outlining the best diners in all 50 states, touting Elmo’s Diner as the place to visit to enjoy an all-day breakfast experience in the Tar Heel State.

Elmo’s Diner opened its doors in 1997, as it “maintains the classic diner charms and décor” thanks to its “exposed brick walls, big windows, and wood floors,” the report stated.

Named after a character in the 1987 film “Made in Heaven,” this could double as a description for the comfort food breakfasts and brunches that attract masses of people to the establishment, which moved to Durham from its original Carrboro location.

“Snag one of the coveted booths (particularly the big round ones) or corner counter seat, then peruse the menu,” the Food Network report stated. “All the morning fare classics are here, like scratch-made omelets, pancakes and waffles.”

For those who want to try a taste of the region, the publication highlights the Southern-leaning signatures like the Southwest shrimp and grits. This dish is anchored with spicy cheese grits, which are topped with scrambled eggs, plump shrimp, as well as decorative tomatoes and scallions.

Others who seek more traditional foods can enjoy a hearty plate of biscuits and gravy. This classic meal comes with two eggs of any style, a homemade biscuit, sausage gravy and a choice of breakfast side and meat.

The writing piece also advises to “save room for a slice of pumpkin apple bread” that’s studded with Granny Smith apples, ensuring a not-too-sweet breakfast delight.

Elmo’s Diner is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Over the weekend, the restaurant’s hours are listed as 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
