Indy man guilty of raping child; sentenced to 50 years

INDIANAPOLIS — A half-century behind bars awaits an Indianapolis man found guilty of raping a child.

Ira Miles, 37, of Indianapolis, was found guilty in June of child molestation, a Level 1 felony; rape, a Level 3 felony; criminal confinement, a Level 5 felony; and intimidation, a Level 6 felony.

For Miles’ crimes, Judge James Osborn handed down a 53-year sentence on Friday, a majority of which — 49 years — will be served in prison.

Court documents detail Miles’ horrid crimes, which first came to light in late 2024.

Investigators spoke to the victim and learned that Miles had raped and sexually assaulted the victim for years. Before one of the first sexual assaults, Miles allegedly told the victim he was “going to show you what boys are going to do to you.”

The victim recounted how Miles would threaten her, telling the child that if she screamed, she “would regret it.”

Miles reportedly had a “very bad temper,” according to some of the people investigators spoke to. He was also said to “become violent when he gets upset.”

The victim told police investigators that Miles swore to kill her if she ever told anyone about the assaults. She also told detectives she couldn’t provide full details about the many sexual assaults due to frequently blacking out during the crimes.

During the investigation into Miles, police learned he had been recently arrested for being caught with a gun. As a felon, Miles was prohibited from owning a firearm.

Witnesses told investigators that Miles was on GPS monitoring and once threatened to cut off his GPS monitor and “come over there” after learning that they were going to the police with the child molestation allegations.

“Our Sex Crimes Unit continually demonstrates that they are among the very best in the country, especially when it comes to prosecuting the most despicable defendants,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “When a child is victimized, they deserve our best fighting for them and that’s what we have here in Marion County.”

A booking photo of Ira Miles was not provided at this time.
