ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC)
Abilene businessman Steve Savage has spent the past 8 years turning an abandoned missile silo, purchased from Anson ISD, into the home of his dreams.
You enter the property and immediately go down multiple flights of stairs before reaching the first level behind a large metal door. This is where Steve has his living quarters, including a living room with couches and TV, a fully functional kitchen, bedroom, and full bathroom with a stand-up shower.
Down even more stairs, you reach the 2nd level, which is where Steve has his ’80s inspired game room. Think whimsical décor like bikes and skateboards, complete with a retro arcade. This level is only partially finished, and Steve wants to add a pool table and more game room activities.
Steve says the game room was a priority for him because he, “grew up when arcades were cool – kids nowadays don’t appreciate it, but I love the 80s.”
Also unfinished – really completely untouched – is the area where the actual missile was stored, in a room that’s a staggering 14 stories tall and steel-enforced. Steve says he does have plans for this space, but a lot of work is needed before it is safe.
There are additional floors Steve can also develop in the future and underneath it all – several stories down below – is running water.
