Stranger danger: Van couple offers rides to Aiken County students

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) – Parents in Aiken county received a warning from school officials Thursday evening.

Educators say several students reported being approached by a male, female couple in a white delivery fan. The couple told them that the bus had broken down and then they offered students a ride.

Attention Families: We have received information from a school principal that several students reported being approached by a male and female adult couple in a white delivery van as they walked to their school bus stop this morning. According to the students, the adults told them that their bus had broken down and they offered to give them a ride to school.

Please be aware:

• No Aiken County school buses were out of service this morning.

• Aiken County Public Schools does not use unmarked white vans to transport students. • In the event of a bus breakdown, another official school bus would be rerouted.   Law enforcement is currently investigating and has increased patrols in the area. We ask all parents and guardians to speak with their children about stranger safety. Remind them:

• Never get into a vehicle with someone they do not know.

• Report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement immediately.   If you have any information about this morning’s incident, please contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.   Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe.
