Scooter safety tips urged after teen’s death in Acadiana

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– Following a fatal electric scooter accident in Breaux Bridge, Lafayette Police Department shared crucial safety tips, emphasizing helmet use, visibility and adherence to traffic laws for all open-air vehicle riders.

Cpl. Ashley Wood with the Lafayette Police Department provided safety tips in wake of the tragedy. 

“Safety is very important whenever you are going to be writing any kind of open air vehicle. Absolutely always wear a helmet, whether it be on a motorcycle, on a moped or a bicycle, an electric scooter, anything like that,” Wood said. “You definitely want to wear a helmet because that’s going to protect your head. Make sure that it is properly sitting and that it is certified as a safety helmet.”

Officials said the crash claimed the life of Da’Marion Lagrange of Breaux Bridge. According to authorities, shortly after midnight, troopers with Louisiana State Police began investigating a fatality crash involving an electric scooter on LA 347 just south of Jolie Blonde Road in St. Martin Parish.

Officials said Lagrange was riding an electric scooter with no lights north in the southbound lane of LA 347. At the same time, a 2015 Chrysler 300 was traveling in the northbound lane of LA 347 and was attempting to pass a slower vehicle in a passing zone.

Cpl. Wood emphasized the importance of visibility provides for other motorists.

“You want to make sure that drivers can see you because if they can’t see you, then, you know, sometimes accidents can happen that way,” Wood said. “If you’re driving something or riding something that doesn’t have a headlamp or brakes, make sure you’re wearing some kind of high visibility clothing, whether it be a traffic vest or a neon colored shirt, something that’s going to make you visible to drivers as they’re traveling down the road.”

Wood said if riders are going to be driving at night, it is suggested to travel in a bike lane or sidewalk if provided and always obey the traffic law and avoid distractions. In terms of road conditions, be aware of gravel or debris that can hinder the driving process.

“You can even tape a flashlight to the top of your bicycle if you need to, You know, use what you have. If you can’t or don’t have the means to get these items from a store, use what you have. You know, if you have a bright yellow shirt where the bright yellow shirt, you know, anything to help yourself be seen,” Wood said.

  • Visibility: Be visible to others, especially at night or in poor weather, by wearing bright or reflective clothing and using lights.
  • Defensive Riding: Anticipate potential hazards and ride defensively, assuming other drivers may not see you.
  • Distractions: Avoid using your phone or wearing headphones while riding.
  • Riding Impaired: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Braking: Ensure your brakes are in good working order and test them before each ride.
  • Weather Conditions: Avoid riding in adverse weather conditions like rain or snow.
  • Road Conditions: Be aware of road hazards like potholes and uneven pavement.
  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain your scooter or bike.
  • Parking: When parking, choose a secure and visible location.

Specific to Electric Scooters:

  • One Rider Only: Electric scooters are designed for a single rider.
  • Sidewalks: Check local regulations regarding riding on sidewalks; some cities may require riding on the street or in bike lanes.
  • Bike Lanes: Utilize bike lanes when available to increase safety.

Specific to Electric Bikes:

  • Bike Lanes: Use bike lanes when available.
  • Power Levels: Start with a low power level and gradually increase as you become comfortable.
  • Pedal Assist: Be mindful of the increased weight and anticipate stopping earlier.
  • Passing: Be courteous when passing other riders or pedestrians.

Battery Safety:

  • Charging: Charge batteries according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Storage: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Overheating: Be aware of potential overheating issues and take precautions.
  • Disposal: Recycle batteries properly.

By following these safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while using motor scooters and electric bikes.
