“This was our cleanest operating practice, which you can expect being the third day. Our QBs operated at a high level and pushed the tempo so it felt good,” first-year head coach Kellen Moore said.
Thursday’s practice was mostly red zone drills, but with more field to play with on Friday, the Black and Gold dialed up deep passes. Rashid Shaheed received the lion’s share of targets, and as the team continues to adopt to Moore’s scheme, Shaheed recognizes how important his role will be.
“With the offense that we’ve studied and we’ve seen on film, I feel like it’s a lot of wide open opportunities for us to catch the ball and get up the field. Lots of big plays, that’s what it’s going to take for us to take the next step, especially with my game,” the fourth-year receiver added.
The defense didn’t win as many reps, but the Black and Gold have a new piece working in their defensive secondary: Julian Blackmon.
New Orleans signed the six-year veteran to a one-year deal on Wednesday, and fellow first-year Saints safety Justin Reid has an early impression of what the two can do in the defensive backfield.
“We’re going to knock people’s blocks off. I love physical DB play, corners included. I think that he’s explosive. I think he has a ton of talent. I think he has a very noticeable change of direction, when he hits the trigger and he wants to go,” Reid added.
Saturday will be the team’s first off day of training camp, but the Saints will begin a five-day stretch of practices, starting Sunday morning.
