Man hit, killed by Raleigh bound Amtrak train in High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — A man was hit and killed by a Raleigh bound Amtrak train in High Point on Thursday night, according to a City of High Point news release.

Around 6:23 p.m., officers responded to the Lincoln Drive and Van Buren Street area in the southwestern area of High Point.

Avery Covert, 45, of Thomasville, died at the scene.

On July 24, Amtrak train 76 was traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh at approx. 6:10 p.m. when an individual who was trespassing on the track came into contact with the train in High Point, North Carolina. There have been no reported injuries to the 86 passengers or crew onboard. Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.
