Man already serving life sentence for murder gets 16.5 additional years for killing fellow inmate

A 44-year-old man was sentenced to 16.5 years (198 months) in prison for killing his fellow inmate at Lino Lakes prison in 2023.

Kyle John Kelbel was already serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction out of Ramsey County in July 2001.

The victim, 63-year-old Steven Paul Patchen, had been serving a nearly 20-year sentence for three second-degree criminal sexual conduct convictions at the time of his murder.
