Extreme heat causes highway to buckle in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Part of a highway in Madison County buckled due to the extreme heat conditions.

According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), the left lane of U.S. 49 South between 1st Street and Petrified Forest Road has been closed. The extreme heat resulted in the roadway to buckle in the left, southbound lane.

MDOT officials said maintenance crews are working to repair the affected area. The lane closure is expected to last until July 29.

During the temporary lane closure, MDOT officials said drivers should slow down, eliminate distractions and be alert for roadside workers.
