Water leak in Potpourri Village disrupts residents’ daily lives

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Residents at a local mobile home park, Potpourri Village, are speaking out about a persistent water leak they say is disrupting their daily lives.

News 10 spoke with a resident, who wishes to remain anonymous. She says something needs to be done to address the issue.

“We’ve been dealing with this for months now and nothing is still not being done, everybody’s blaming everyone and we’re the ones that are suffering in the process,” said the resident.

She says she has lived in the mobile home park for four years and says the leak has been a serious issue for six to eight months. According to her, water constantly seeps up from underground, flooding her yard and attracting snakes, mosquitoes and even water moccasins.

“Five, six feet from the ditch into my yard I can’t walk there, I’m sinking up to my knees, that’s how wet it is, I can’t get back there to cut the grass because I can’t get a lawn mower and weed eater back there, you’re sinking,” said the resident.

She also says heavy rain makes the situation worse by flooding the entire yard. Despite reaching out to the Lafayette Waterworks District North and the park’s owners, she hasn’t been given an answer on when the issue will be fixed.

“I’ve called the water company to come out and check the leak, they confirmed the leak is on them, but they can’t get to the leak to actually find the exact spot that it’s in because there’s no proper drainage,” said the resident.

News 10 reached out to the co-owner of Potpourri Village, Kris Hodges, who provided the following statement:

“That particular water leak has existed for years but has gotten worse the last few months. Our team member has been on site with Gregg and another gentleman from the Lafayette Parish Water Works District North. The Lafayette Parish Water Works District North knows that this leak exists, know it’s their responsibility to fix it, has a right of way to access the leak for repairs, but will not work on it until the area is dry. We cannot make the area dry out because of their water leak. We have been running a pump for a few weeks as an effort to get the area dry enough for them to work. This has not helped because there is an active leak in the area. Same issue exists at other lots in the community. Lafayette Parish Water Works District North is losing money and therefore driving up the costs of water to all users in their service area.”
