The app called Coqui allows users to mark locations where they see ICE activity, as well as share information with others without the risk of exposure. In addition to identifying nearby ICE activity, the app enables users to upload photos, engage in private chats, and discover local businesses that also use the app.
During an interview, the app’s creator discussed some of the reasons he created the app, citing the need to protect loved ones. He also said some of his employees were not showing up for work because they were afraid to leave their homes.
Since taking office, President Trump has fulfilled many of the promises he made during his campaign, with ICE raids notably increasing every day. His administration even ordered officials to aim for 3,000 arrests a day, but this has caused widespread concerns, with many reports showing that the number of people without criminal convictions in detention centers nearly doubled in June. According to multiple organizations, as of early July, nearly 60,000 people are in ICE detention.
