Los Bukis receive star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

A crowded morning on Hollywood Boulevard, where thousands of fans lined up to see Los Bukis get a star on the Walk of Fame.

One of them was comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, who was there to praise the Grammy-nominated Mexican band. Actor Demian Bichir was also on hand to honor them.

“I would wake up to their songs, and as a kid, that has that strong connection where every time I hear one of these songs, it reminds me of my childhood. So, when I say it is an honor to be here, I mean that,” Iglesias exclaimed.

They’re known for hits like “Quiéreme,” “Yo Te Necesito,” “Presiento Que Voy a Llorar,” “A Donde Vayas,” “Ya Ahora Te Vas,” “Tus Mentiras,” “Morenita” and “Necesito Una Compañera.”

The group was first formed by cousins Marco Antonio and Joel Solís when they were kids. Two years later, they were signed by Discos Melody in 1973. The name “Los Bukis” means “children” in the Yaqui language.

The duo evolved into a full band by adding Marco Ibarra on drums, Arturo Martínez on bass, and Alfonso Bugarini on keyboards. The lineup continued to grow with Eusebio “Chivo” Cortés on bass in 1978, Roberto Guadarrama on keyboards in 1979, Javier Solís on percussion in 1980, Pedro Sánchez on drums in 1981 and José Guadarrama on second keyboards in 1987.

Solís’s songwriting prowess and distinctive voice helped the band become pioneers of the romantic ballad in Spanish-language music.

Their big break came in 1976 with “Falso Amor.” In the ’80s, Los Bukis headlined massive concerts and dominated radio. Their 1986 hit “Tu Cárcel” earned them Mexico’s first Diamond Record and three Grammy nominations. They’ve performed at legendary venues like Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Mexico’s Auditorio Nacional.

They most recently sold out SoFi Stadium for their reunion tour following a 25-year hiatus.

The band also makes time to give back. They donate to charitable organizations local to their native city in Michoacán, Mexico, with the purpose of supporting vulnerable communities.

The star is located on Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea and Sycamore.
