Firefighters battle fast-moving brush fire in Chino Hills

Firefighters rushed to contain a rapidly spreading brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in southwestern San Bernardino County.

The Euclid Fire was first spotted around 1:45 p.m. along Highway 71 in Chino Hills. As of 4:30 p.m., it had burned approximately 150 acres on both sides of the highway, a Cal Fire spokesperson told KTLA 5 News.

Sky5’s Gil Leyvas reported that the blaze was burning through dry brush on the west side of the highway and also thicker vegetation in the area of Prado Regional Park and Chino Creek, just north of the Santa Ana River bed.

Smoke was visible from across Jurupa Valley and the Inland Empire.

Several fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were assisting ground crews in building containment lines and dousing the fire with water, though by 5 p.m. fire officials said aerial crews were being released as a dozer line was completed around the blaze, the fire was holding within the perimeter and that ground crews had sufficient resources.

Forward progress of brush fire just before 5:30 p.m., prompting CHP and Caltrans to open one north and southbound lane of Highway 71 at Euclid Avenue.

There were no reports of homes threatened or evacuations. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
