CACHE COUNTY (ABC4) — A new fire has started in Logan Canyon and reached between 50 and 70 acres, prompting closures of US Highway 89
Utah Fire Info released information that a new fire has started in Cache County in Logan County. The fire, titled the Rick Springs Fire, has already grown to approximately 50-70 acres and is burning in heavy timber.
According to Utah Fire Info, the Lewis M. Turner and Tony Grove areas have both been evacuated. Due to the fire, Highway 89 will be closed between First Dam and the rest area (MP461-493) through at least 7/22. Officials recommend SR-39 as an alternative route.
Local, county, state and forest service engines have all responded, in addition to a helicopter and air tankers, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Additionally, a Type 3 Incident Management Team is set to arrive and assume management of the fire on July 23, 2025.
Todd Stewart and his son, Rowan, had to turn around due to road closures when the fire started. They took about thirty miles of dirt roads to avoid the closure and return home. He told ABC4 correspondent Brian Champagne, “We could see the fire coming back into the trailhead, right there by Temple Fork.”
Fire officials have determined that the fire is human caused, though they have not specified exactly how it began.
