FIRE START: Small but active fire on rough terrain east of Scipio
SCIPIO, Utah (ABC4) — A new fire start has been reported east of Scipio, and it has been named the Basin Canyon Fire.

According to Utah Fire Info, the Basin Canyon Fire is currently estimated at 2-4 acres in size, but rough terrain is limiting access for fire engines.

In addition to ground crews, air resources are responding, including a type 3 helicopter and four SEATs.

A type 3 helicopter is a smaller helicopter, but it can fly higher than other helicopters and arrive on scene faster, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. They can carry 4-5 firefighters at a time and use a 180-gallon water bucket.

SEAT stands for single engine airtanker, and they are the smallest type of airtanker. Despite being small, they can still deliver 800 gallons of water or fire retardant. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, they are ideal for wildfires in lighter fuels like grasses or sagebrush.

The ground resources responding include a hand crew and smoke jumpers. Hand crews work on the ground to establish a fireline using hand tools. Smoke jumpers are specialized firefighters who travel across the country to provide a quick initial attack on wildfires in remote areas.
