A judge has sentenced Michael McClain to 24 months in federal prison, but did not impose a fine. He is required to surrender in eight weeks.
This is a developing story. Check back for details.
Earlier story:
McClain was a lobbyist and confidant of former House Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan, who was recently sentenced to over 7 years in prison on federal corruption charges.
Federal prosecutors alleged that ComEd officials and others, known as the “ComEd Four,” devised a scheme to influence Madigan by paying his allies a total of $1.3 million from 2011 through 2019 for allegedly non-existent consulting contracts.
It’s been more than two years since a jury convicted all four: Madigan ally McClain, former ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore, ex-ComEd lobbyist John Hooker, and former City Club President Jay Doherty.
Instead of prison time, attorneys representing McClain have pushed for him to receive probation. They say he has health battles that could get worse behind bars.
McClain will be the third of the four defendants to be sentenced in the case.
Earlier this week, former ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore was given two years in prison and a $750,000 fine.
Former ComEd lobbyist John Hooker received a year and a half behind bars and fined $500,000 at a hearing last week.
Federal prosecutors are also seeking a prison sentence for Jay Doherty, another member of the ComEd Four.
