BATON ROUGE, La. (
Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested two men accused of a drive-by shooting.
According to an affidavit, officers were called to the 5600 block of Autumn Blossom Drive about a reported shooting. Upon arrival, a tenant of the apartment complex notified authorities that her home had been struck by gunfire. While on scene, a complainant said they saw a Chevy Impala leaving the scene at high speeds. They also said they last saw the vehicle on South Sunset Hill Avenue with a flat tire.
After officers arrived at the vehicle with the flat tire, they saw three males. One man was seen wearing a black mask, a black jacket, and red shoes, running into the residence on S. Sunset Hill Avenue. The man exited the building shortly after.
Once all men were detained, the three were identified as Javeon Brown, 21, Zavieon Thomas, 18, and a juvenile. Officers found an AK pistol in the trunk of the vehicle and two spent shell casings inside the center console, and one on the passenger floor.
Officers believe one of the suspects ran into the home to hide evidence. The affidavit said that BRPD contacted the tenant and asked if they could search the home; the tenant voluntarily agreed. After the search, officers found a Glock handgun with an extended magazine under the covers of Thomas’ bed.
During questioning, Thomas and Brown admitted to having the guns and firing rounds, allegedly in self-defense, after someone else was shooting at them. When asked who the juvenile was, they responded that he was their little brother. The mother assured officers that the juvenile was not her son, but a friend to her children.
Thomas and Brown were both arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of aggravated criminal damage to property, assault by drive-by shooting, and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. Thomas has an additional charge of illegal use of weapons. The juvenile was taken to the EBR Juvenile Detention Center.
