‘We’re incredibly excited’: Playground overhaul marks start of new chapter at Gage Park

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka families will soon be able to enjoy brand-new playground equipment and options to have fun together at a popular local park.

Ashley Gilfillan with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation (SCP+R) told 27 News that work is moving forward to make some big changes at Gage Park this year. She said nearly all of the old playground equipment in the ‘Playland’ area is gone

“Work on the Playland project is progressing well!” Gilfillan said. “While the planning stages took a bit longer than initially anticipated, we’re confident the final result will be well worth the wait. Most of the new equipment has been ordered, and the community can look forward to an amazing new Playland experience.”

Shawnee County commissioners approved of plans to give Playland a major overhaul earlier this year with the installation of many new playground equipment pieces to replace the older structures on site. The plan is meant to give the park a makeover and make it a more enjoyable experience for children and families.

“We’re incredibly excited about what’s coming to Gage Park’s Playland,” Gilfillan said. “This project is designed to deliver a premier playground experience for all of Shawnee County, one that truly reflects the grandeur of Gage Park itself. We can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

The SCP+R’s current work doesn’t include any of the nearby ‘Animaland’ area that is home to multiple unique playground pieces that have been in the park for years. Gilfillan said most of the work happening in Gage Park is centered on Playland with only one piece of the previous playground equipment sticking around while the rest is replaced.

Park-goers also have the new ‘SkyTrail’ to look forward to. Shawnee County commissioners approved of plans to install the $1.28 million SkyTrail, consisting of raised platforms connected by rope bridges, earlier this year with the help of RCI Adventure Products.

“Our Public Works department is currently undertaking excavation work,” Gilfillan said. “As soon as this phase is complete, we’ll begin laying the footings for the new SkyTrail. We anticipate the installation of the new Playland pieces to commence shortly thereafter.”

Gilfillan said the SCP+R is shooting to have all the new park improvements completed by early to mid-spring in 2026. She said people may notice some other changes happening around Gage Park in the days ahead including the addition of new signage, a new sand volleyball area and renovations to the carousel.
