ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Video captured the dramatic moment when responders hoisted someone from the Chesapeake Bay after a boat overturned Saturday, leaving three people stranded in the water.

According to a release from Maryland State Police (MSP), at around 5 p.m. on July 19, first responders from St. Mary’s County were sent to a location on the Chesapeake Bay about 300 yards offshore for the report of three people in the water.

The MSP Aviation Command Trooper 7 crew, the agency’s helicopter based in California, Md., responded to the scene after overhearing about the incident on the county dispatch radio and coordinating with St. Mary’s County.

The helicopter crew then made contact with the incident command officer from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department, who requested that they perform an aerial hoist rescue due to the delayed arrival of the nearest fireboat, according to state police.

To prepare for the rescue, the helicopter hovered over the three people, and a rescue basket was deployed. A video released by MSP showed the crew lowering the basket and safely pulling one person to safety.

The flight crew began evaluating the person; however, they did not need to be flown to an area hospital, MSP noted. Instead, the state police helicopter landed next to the command post and transferred the patient to an awaiting ambulance, where their family was also waiting.

A fireboat from Calvert County arrived just after the helicopter hoisted the first person into the aircraft and safely rescued the two others who were stranded.
