DALLAS (KDAF) — California tops the list of states with the harshest summer conditions, according to a recent study by McLuck.

The study evaluated all 50 states using six key metrics: average summer temperature, humidity, UV index, lack of water access, percentage of homes with air conditioning, and rainfall. California’s combination of high humidity, intense UV exposure, and limited water access contributed to its top ranking.

Despite having the lowest average summer temperature among the top 10 states at 73.4°F, California’s high humidity of 74% and a UV index of 8.5 make it particularly uncomfortable. The state also suffers from the worst rainfall score, receiving only half an inch during the summer months.

Louisiana has the highest average summer temperature of any state at 81.1°F, coupled with a humidity level of 73%.

Florida, known as the Sunshine State, ranks third due to its high humidity of 76% and 22 inches of rain, the highest in the study. With an average summer temperature of 81°F, Florida’s summers are described as a ‘steam bath,’ even though 96% of homes have air conditioning.

Texas, tied with Louisiana for the highest average summer temperature, has a slightly lower humidity of 63% but faces a brutal UV index of 9.5. With a lack of water access score of 92.23, outdoor relief is limited, although 95% of homes have air conditioning.

The study highlights the diverse challenges faced by states during the summer, with factors like temperature, humidity, and water access playing significant roles in determining comfort levels. As climate conditions continue to evolve, understanding these metrics becomes increasingly important for residents and policymakers alike.
