Sunday forecast: Showers and storms around Chicagoland gradually clearing, with cooler temps

High heat and humidity will stay away from Chicagoland on Sunday and for the start of the coming work week.

But it’s going to return with a vengeance.

First, however, northeast winds will bring cooler temps to the area on Sunday, especially along the lakefront. That will also stir up Lake Michigan, with a Beach Hazards Statement in effect for Lake and Cook counties through Monday morning. Waves up to 3 to 5 feet could occur, making swimming dangerous along the shoreline.

Meanwhile, showers and storms are moving through parts of Chicagoland in the morning hours Sunday, particularly in southern areas. Forecast models show the rain lingering into the afternoon, but we’re likely to see gradual clearing around the area as Sunday progresses, with high temperatures remaining in the mid-70s.

Monday should then bring a pleasant start to the work week, with sunshine and high temps in the lower 80s, before significant late July heat and humidity envelops Chicagoland for the rest of the coming week (see more below).

Heat and humidity begins to really take hold across the Midwest starting Tuesday, ushering in a trend of very summery conditions as July comes to a close.

Around Chicagoland, highs temps are projected to climb into the upper 80s on Tuesday, then they’re forecast to soar into the mid- to upper 90s on Wednesday and Thursday and remain around 90 for the rest of the week and into next weekend.

With the humidity factored in, the heat index in Chicagoland during the middle of the coming week could be something like 105 to 115 degrees. We’ll certainly keep you updated on the coming hot and humid conditions.
