Singular ZIP codes may be coming to Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield, Noblesville

INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers living in Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield and Noblesville may be getting a new ZIP code.

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives directs the United States Postal Service to designate single, unique ZIP codes to 74 communities across the country. Included among those 74 communities in the bill are the Hamilton County cities of Carmel, Westfield and Noblesville in addition to the Boone County city of Zionsville.

These cities currently boast multiple ZIP codes, with Carmel leading the pack with six different area codes. Under the new bill, each city would instead have one unified ZIP code.

“Having multiple zip codes in our area creates confusion for residents and homebuyers,” said Carmel Mayor Suie Finkam, who supports the measure.

Finkam said multiple ZIP codes can lead to new homeowners assuming they are purchasing a home in Carmel, due to having a Carmel address, only to later learn it is outside the city limits and school district.

“I support an effort to establish a single ZIP code that reflects our true community boundaries, protects families from this kind of confusion and fosters one identity,” Finkam said.

Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, H.R. 3095 passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday and heads now to the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
