Minnesota Department of Health updates ‘chemicals of high concern’ list

The Minnesota Department of Health has published its list of high-concern chemicals that may be present in children’s toys and products.

The list, updated every three years, added 15 additional chemicals and removed 200 based on what the department calls an extensive review of the latest oxicology research and statutory requirements.

“We conducted a needs assessment with health care professionals, community members and community advocates to give us a deeper understanding of how to tailor health messages so they are relevant, clear and useful to the people most impacted,” said Nini Mentan, the Toxic Free Kids program coordinator.

A chemical of high concern is defined by MDH as one known or suspected to harm the development of a fetus or child, cause cancer, genetic dmage or reproductive harm, disrupt the enocrine or hormone system, damages organs, the nervous and immune systems or other harm to the body or be persistent, toxic or build up in the body.
