Just before 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, officers responded to reports of a man who was shot at the intersection of West Charles Street and North Ames Street. When they arrived, they found a man who was shot in the face and receiving medical care from Matthews Fire & EMS.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is still in critical, but stable, condition, officials said.
About two hours later, around 10 p.m., officers found a man matching the description given to them and confirmed that he was the suspect in the case. The suspect, 45-year-old Gaddy Cornell, was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and booked under a $5,000 bond. During the investigation, officials learned this was an isolated incident between two people who were believed to be in an ongoing dispute.
Authorities said this is still an active investigation.
