In a Facebook post, the Monon Volunteer Fire Department reported that, at approximately 5:37 p.m. Monday, crews responded to a structure fire at 402 N. Railroad St. in Monon. The address is home to Monon Meat Packing.

When crews arrived at the scene, they located thick black smoke emanating from the rear of the facility. MVFD personnel immediately began fire suppression efforts upon their arrival.
The fire department confirmed that it took crews about seven hours to extinguish the fire. In total, more than 13 emergency response agencies from three different counties were sent to the scene. MVFD reported that it received assistance at the scene from more than 100 people.
